Bad Eats - Hastings

Bad company Est.2017

At Bad Company we love coffee and we loooooove food. If you are visiting Hastings and aren’t sure of the best spots to eat & drink - well we’ve gone ahead and made it easy for you. Just a stones throw from our Hastings co-working space, here’s our top picks - straight from our legendary community manager. Take it away Belinda….

CoFFEE

Bad Company Hastings has a plunger for both the de-cafe and caffeinated lover, but if you are in need of a stronger espresso hit I recommend the following spots for a good brew:

  • The Artisan Cafe: Open 8.30 - 2 pm Monday - Friday. Great coffee and good-looking snacks in the cabinet. Last week I got a decaf americano from here and there was no judgement on my dirty water. I would return. Top tip: take a BC mug with you as they only do takeaways.

  • Kindred Road: Opens at 9 am. Walk across the road, through the door and to the counter, do not get distracted by the beautiful homewares or incredible baking treats. A trip to Kindred Road can be as small as a $5 coffee, or a coffee and an accidental chair purchase. Just saying.

  • Cupple: Opens 7 am, great for all those morning birds, any birds for that matter. Their custard doughnuts are hard to pass... and their pastries. Probably worth mentioning they share a building with Ya'Bon Pastries. For a midday snack or lunch, they have these baguettes. Last Tuesday, they sold out by 12.30, and now I have an 11.45 alarm set on baguette-getting-days to prevent the comedown of missing out.

EAT

This is bragging, but we have two epic, sell-by-the-slice pizza spots right here in Hastings.

  • Spookies: Nothing scary about this place, nothing traditional either. A slice of pizza starts at $5.50 and for the moderate eater, one slice for lunch is fab. Hard to select just one flavour though, and two is always a good time. Can recommend the white, red and purple pizza slices.

  • Bambina: The OG pizza king Alex, is in the block. He gave away free slices for his first week as a marketing promo, which was weeks ago and the line remains.

  • Best Sammies in town - Look him up on IG. Thursday and Friday, 12 pm - 1 pm only. Homemade focaccia and holy shit, it's amazing. Koren beef, butter chicken, the standard BLT, wagyu bresaola, and rear roast beef (just to name a few). Have slid into his DM's to pre-order and will again.

  • Tumeke Don - recently moved from Napier to Hastings and we are much better for it. The last time I was here, I saw a lad from Havelock, who had legit driven to Tumeke Don for lunch. That round trip is longer than ones allotted 30 mins for lunch but for Tumeke Don, I would too.

  • OMGoodness - sometimes it feels fun to shout it out in public. When you shout this one, it comes with gluten-free bread that you can either get by the loaf or as a sammy. A great option if you are feeling horny or healthy.

Drink

  • Well, there's Brave. It's a local craft beer brewery and I am on a first-name basis with the bartenders. They started at the Hawkes Bay farmers and market and now brew just over the road.

  • Rosie O'Grady's, it's an Irish bar, need I say more? When have you been to an Irish bar and had a bad time? Never. That's right. Top tip, they are on the opposite corner to Bad Company and the pedestrian crossing is not a barnyard crossing and you will get nailed by a car. Cross the road safely team.

Something else

Something fancy? Sazio. Open for lunch Wednesday - Friday and dinner on Saturday. It's Italian, owned by an Argentinian with the head chef from South Africa. This team knows how to make and cook pasta. Their wine menu is selected and I can recommend anything, they're all delicious.

A snack perhaps? Cornucopia is a small organic grocer and has everything from eco-friendly toothpaste to healing crystals, dried bananas to fresh veges. It's got them all.

Finish off with dessert? No problem. Rush Munro's ( a Hawkes Bay Icon) has a cool container store just over the way. Great for a mid-day pick me up, or when one needs to cool their jets.
